What Is Remedial Massage

There is often confusion as to what remedial massage is?

Remedial according to the English Dictionary means the following : Intending or Intended to Rectify or Improve. When you take the meaning literally there are a range of massage/bodywork techniques that come under different names that fall into this category.

For example: Deep tissue, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Pregnancy, lymphatic drainage, Myo therapy, Bowen, Emmett technique, Remedial massage, Hot Stone, Sports, Thai and so many more…..

Techniques employed can be either firm and penetrating and/or soft and gentle, – general application is on the soft tissues of the body.

All these techniques aim to assist in restoring, sore backs, sore shoulders, sore neck, sore hips, knees, feet, health in general, reduce pain, tension and encourage deep relaxation of which the latter is essential for any effective long term healing to occur.

In Australia, Remedial Massage can be referred to as a standard of professional qualification.

The goal of remedial massage is to reduce pain, increase mobility and relieve stress.
Because every person is unique, a variety of approaches may be used to address individual needs.

Each treatment begins with a consultation and based on my findings, I use a variety of the following techniques to correct the issue.

Deep tissue massage. This approach is slow and penetrates gently and firmly into the deeper layers of body tissue to release pain and tension.

Shiatsu technique uses thumbs, elbows, palms, specific points and sustained pressure to create change and deep relaxation.

Reflexology focuses on pressure points in the feet to affect whole body healing and relaxation.

Emmett Technique incorporates gentle muscle release moves to realign the structure and relax and strengthen muscles of the body.

Stretch therapy may be included in your treatment giving you strategic self care techniques to do at home. Stretch therapy is both diagnostic and corrective. All or some of the above techniques may be used in your treatments.
